Skeletons in the Closet • My pepeha was difficult to write: – My family is unsure if my tupuna wahine’s mama was actually, in fact, her Maori wet nurse. My pepeha is written assuming this fact is correct. Trying to get names and facts from my family has been difficult as there is disagreement. – Raised as pakeha, my father was the only pakeha in a Maori rugby club (ARFC in Gore), he discovered the above, had a passion for Te Reo and Maori Culture, learned Te Reo Maori and became Rangatira on O te ikarama Marae (Waipahi/Mc. Nab). – My mother did not want my father to take my siblings and I to the marae, so we grew up ignorant of Te Reo and Tikanga. – My interest and curiosity grew from my father’s interest and curiosity. I have lead the Whanau Support group at my school and am slowly learning more about my whakapapa and a little Te Reo. I have lead Matariki celebrations and organised carving of pou for Te Maramara a Tane, the school marae.
