Mrs. Vaglia’s Class Newsletter 11/22/19 What’s happening in Math? We’ve been working on doubles

Mrs. Vaglia’s Class Newsletter 11/22/19 What’s happening in Math? We’ve been working on doubles and doubles plus 1. They need to know their doubles facts immediately, like their name! Doubles plus 1 facts are a quick way to find the sum. For example, 2 + 3 is a doubles plus 1 fact. Think 2 + 2 and add 1 more. Three is one more than 2. This works for all numbers right next to each other; 3 + 4, 4 + 5, 5 + 6. We practice word problems each week too Be sure your child is using dreambox at home to reinforce math. Social Studies We have moved ahead about 150 years and are now learning about the 1700’s in Virginia. There was a lot of change over those years. It was hard times for some people. It is a good lesson to learn the importance of treating all people with respect. 9 What’s happening in Reading? The children learned about a tricky vowel sound called “schwa”. It is when a vowel a, e, i or o, makes the sound of /u/, as in shovel. They have also learned the sounds nk, ng, v, y, and w. We are applying these sounds into daily reading. In the next two weeks, we will be doing reading assessments to show they’ve improved. Keep reading at home! What’s happening in Writing? At this point, the children should know capital letters do not belong in the middle or end of a word. Over break, please practice writing and correct letter formation. Thanksgiving I wish you all a safe and healthy Thanksgiving holiday! I am thankful for the support I receive each week and the teamwork I feel as we work together to help your child be successful. Please continue to have your child read to you over our short break and get them on Squiggle Park and dreambox to reinforce skills.

Many students have been getting sick lately. Please remind them to wear a coat, pack extra gloves, hats, and dress in layers. We go out! A Play – The Our class will be putting on a play Mitten called, The Mitten. It is based off the book by Jan Brett. I have adapted the story so each child in the class will have the part of either a narrator or character. Each part is as important as another. Without the narrators, the story could not be told. Without the characters, they could not act out the story. I will be finalizing the parts over the Thanksgiving break and will be handing out the scripts right after. They will have 2 weeks to learn/memorize their parts, then we will begin rehearsing with our 3 rd grade buddies. We will be making props and some costumes. They will perform in January. If you have them, or know of a friend with a baby, please ask if we can have them. I am also in need of parent volunteers to help with gifts! Anyone available? Intern from UMW Miss Havert, our intern from University of Mary Washington, just finished her 20 hours of observation and interaction in our class. The children enjoyed having her in class and worked closely with quite a few of our students. We wish her well. New Student! This week, we gained another girl in our class! Her name is Ally. She just moved here from Missouri! She is very sweet and seems like she has been a member of our class since the beginning! The children have welcomed her warmly. The girls are thrilled! We are very glad to have her. Please note we now have 25 students in class!
