Amelia Earhart. Adventure loving American pilot Amelia Earhart wanted to become the first ever woman to fly solo across the vast Atlantic Ocean. Even though the dangerous journey had only been completed solo by one man before, and many others had died attempting it, Amelia was still determined to let her dreams take flight. The adventure starts here. 20 th May 1931 Amelia takes off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, Canada, headed for Paris, France. Stormy Skies Strong winds and icy conditions cause mechanical problems. Amelia realises she isn’t going to make it to Paris. Flying high Thinking quickly, Amelia changes course and lands safely in Londonderry, Northern Ireland! (Phew) 14 hours and 56 minutes after setting off Amelia becomes the first woman to fly the Atlantic solo.
