Why kitchens are the ideal place for pests �Kitchens are warm �There is food and water �Natural place for pests to thrive �Pests feed mostly on spices, dried fruit, cereal products and dog food

Pests Cockroaches Flies � Not necessarily found in dirty � Often found in summer during kitchens � Biggest problem is kitchens with lots of clutter – give hiding places � They are active during night � They hide behind fridge, inside dishwasher, behind sinks and around hot water systems cooking time � Ensure that food are properly covered � Kitchens can be equipped with fly screens and self closing doors � Use fly traps, and change them regularly

Pests Rats and Mice Weevils � Most activity takes place at � These insects live in flour, night � Check for droppings – they like places where they can hide, under fridge and dishwasher � Rodents will enter the kitchen through doors that are poorly fitted, holes in floors and walls � Traps with bait can be used to control these rodents breakfast cereal, rice and pasta � Food must be stored in airtight containers

Guidelines to control pests � Store food in airtight plastic, metal or glass containers � Keep kitchen clean � Cover all food – don’t leave open overnight � Remove dirt and food from drains � Waste bin must seal properly � Remove rubbish from kitchen every day � Remember prevention is the best way to control pests
