• Secara harfiah, internet (kependekan dari interconnected-networking) ialah rangkaian komputer yang terhubung di dalam beberapa rangkaian. Manakala Internet (huruf 'I' besar) ialah sistem komputer umum, yang berhubung secara global dan menggunakan TCP/IP sebagai protokol pertukaran paket (packet switching communication protocol). Rangkaian internet yang terbesar dinamakan Internet. Cara menghubungkan rangkaian dengan kaedah ini dinamakan internetworking.

• A formal definition of Internet, which was adopted in 1995 by the Federal Networking Council (FNC) (http: //www. fnc. gov/Internet_res. html) is as below: • • RESOLUTION: The Federal Networking Council (FNC) agrees that the following language reflects our definition of the term Internet refers to the global information system that: • is logically linked together by a globally unique address space based on the Internet Protocol (IP) or its subsequent extensions/follow-ons: • is able to support communications using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite or its subsequent extensions/follow-ons, and/or other IP-compatible protocols; and • provides, uses or makes accessible, either publicly or privately, high level services layered on the communications and related infrastructure described herein.
