Group Work Each group will be allocated an animal to investigate and some quotations to explore. You should produce a 1 page information sheet for the rest of the class so that we can create a class booklet. In your groups you should: • Find where the animal appears in the novel (is it in more than 1 place? ) • Discuss why Steinbeck has chosen to use this particular animal: – What does it tell us about the setting? – What does it tell us about the characters? – Is it used to foreshadow any later events? • Analyse key quotations • Discuss how this links with the main themes and context of the novel. http: //www. slideshare. net/bluejorj/of-mice-of-men-animals

Robert Frost (1874 -1963) Two Tramps in Mud Time Out of the mud two

Robert Frost (1874 -1963) Two Tramps in Mud Time Out of the mud two strangers came And caught me splitting wood in the yard, And one of them put me off my aim By hailing cheerily "Hit them hard!" I knew pretty well why he dropped behind And let the other go on a way. I knew pretty well what he had in mind: He wanted to take my job for pay. The time when most I loved my task These two must make me love it more By coming with what they came to ask. You´d think I never had felt before The weight of an axhead poised aloft, The grip on earth of outspread feet. The life of muscles rocking soft And smooth and moist in vernal* heat. *Vernal = appropriate to Spring Task: In groups discuss the following: 1. What does this poem mean? 2. What do you know about the speaker and how do you know it? 3. What do you observe about the rhythm and imagery of the poem? 4. How does the imagery of the poem relate to the meaning of the poem? 5. How does the poem relate to Of Mice and Men?
