9 These are the generations of Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Genesis 6: 9 -10)

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. (Genesis 6: 11 -12)

13 And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. (Genesis 6: 13)

14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. (Genesis 6: 14 -16)

17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them. ” (Genesis 6: 17 -21)

Main Point • These verses do four things • First: Describe the state of the world • Second: God’s response • Third: The Promise to Noah • Fourth: Noah’s Response

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith • We notice two things, righteousness and faith

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith • We notice two things, righteousness and faith • Thus, we find a great deal about ourselves • Consider righteousness • That which is righteous is against that which is unrighteous • God had decreed His righteousness would be revealed against humanity • Rarely do we consider God’s righteousness revealed against us • Why should it surprise us that God, being righteous, will not suffer the unrighteous to live forever?

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (2) • It would be no different if

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (2) • It would be no different if the judge allowed the murderer to go free • That is the problem we find in Genesis, even with ourselves • Righteousness is not defined by us, but by God’s character • When we break His Law, we find ourselves in the struggle • He is the righteous one, and we see righteousness when we gaze upon Him • We continue to see, then, the difference between what is good, moral, just, and what is evil, immoral, unjust • With God we have a foundation because of who He is

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (3) • This leads to Noah himself •

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (3) • This leads to Noah himself • While the world was full of evil individuals, there was one individual who fit the bill • As God tells Noah what He is going to do, God also tells Noah what Noah must do • Does Noah’s own righteousness save him? • If you notice, while Noah is more righteous, he is also seen to have found favor in the eyes of the Lord • While Noah found favor because he walked with God, it doesn’t necessarily lead to his own salvation • Without God guiding Noah, Noah would have drowned

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (5) • God gives grace which gives Noah

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (5) • God gives grace which gives Noah the command which Noah must be obedient to • This requires more than righteousness…it requires faith • Faith that God is going to send a flood • Faith that the dimensions of the ark are appropriate • Faith that if Noah does remain obedient it will lead to salvation • All of that which Noah does is not based on his righteousness, but on faith in God • Like Noah we live in a generation which is evil • Like Noah, we live in a world in which we need salvation • Like Noah, our righteousness is not enough to save us

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (6) • Noah is whispering the same instructions

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (6) • Noah is whispering the same instructions as Enoch • “Be faithful, be faithful. Faith will lead to salvation. Only by faith will you have life instead of death. ” • Why did Noah have faith? • The answer is that He knew God • By walking with God Noah knew God • Noah could have faith that the promises of God were sure, because he had experienced God in his life • There are many things that give us sleepless nights (finances, arguments, future etc. )

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (7) • Maybe we think our burdens are

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (7) • Maybe we think our burdens are greater than Noah's • Yet try trading places with this man… • He may have been told in advance, but he still needed faith • Noah needed as much faith even knowing what was in store as we do in our circumstances • Noah is someone which we could learn a great deal from • He reminds us God is good, righteous, makes promises, and fulfills them • He promised to be with the faithful • That the faithful would be blessed with the knowledge and presence of the God who created them

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (8) • What should our response be? •

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (8) • What should our response be? • The same as Noah • We are to be faithful in all seasons • To dedicate ourselves to God, regardless of the circumstances • And it should be no surprise to learn that is isn’t necessarily easy • There is so much that would pull our affections away from the one who loves us dearly • What could keep us from falling into the trap? • Not our righteousness, but faith in our God

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (9) • If we learn nothing from the

Application Points • Righteousness and Faith (9) • If we learn nothing from the next few chapters, let us learn at least this • Faith in God is where righteousness, life, peace, true security, love itself • Faith will lead to these things and more • Let us then learn to be like Noah • The storm is not here yet, and still we find Noah in obedience • Have faith then, knowing that the one in whom we place our faith in will pull us through
