Live at Five Hunger and Thirst after Righteousness Matthew 5: 3 -10

Hunger & Thirst After Righteousness • Beginning of the Sermon on the Mount • Follow formula: “Blessed are” + attribute = reward • “Blessed are” in Greek is MARKARIOS; Latin th Vulgate [late 4 Century] is BEATUS. Anglicized from Latin to English: BEATITUDE • “Manifesto of the Kingdom”

1. A Desire: Hunger & Thirst • The desire of hunger – all know physical hunger. This is a spiritual desire. John 6: 32 -58 • The desire of thirst – all know physical thirst. This too is a spiritual desire. John 4: 5 -15 • What happens of we don’t eat & drink spiritually? We get weak > sick > die. • Prodigal son was dead – Luke 15: 24 • Those living in please are dead – 1 Timothy 5: 6

2. Object of the Desire: Righteousness • Not of man • Isaiah 64: 6 | Matthew 5: 20 | Philippians 3: 8 -10 • Is from God, by faith, & found in the Gospel • Romans 10: 1 -4 | Philippians 3: 9 | Romans 1: 16 -17 • Must be sought first in our lives • Matthew 6: 33 | 1 John 3: 7 • H&T after righteousness means to satisfy the daily desire by knowing & living God’s Word.

3. Satisfying the Desire: To Be Filled • The Bible has what we need to eat & drink. • Milk, 1 Peter 2: 2 | Meat, Hebrews 5: 14 | need both • God has given an “all you can eat” buffet • Enough challenge in this world to constantly desire food – 2 Corinthians 13: 5 | Luke 9: 23 • Enough teaching to last a lifetime – Lamentations 3: 22 -24 | 2 Timothy 2: 15 • Will we eat that of what God has freely given? • We can be spiritually healthy or spiritually anorexic.

Hunger and Thirst We have recognized the need of this beatitude 1. Desire to be spiritually hungry & thirsty 2. Great object of that desire – righteousness 3. Way to satisfy desire – learning & applying God’s will to our life Jesus has the bread of life and the living water.
