Fay Godwin Landscape Photography – Homework Project Fay Godwin was a British photographer who became famous for her photos of black and white landscapes in the 1970’s to 1990’s. Her work explores theme of the human impact on landscapes around Britain. Fay Godwin first became interested in photography in the mid-1960 s as a result of taking pictures of her young children. Alongside early portrait work, she developed an interest in Landscape photography. Her photography has sometimes been linked to a tradition of romantic representations of the British landscape. As a socialist and active environmentalist, Godwin makes the land in her photographs reveal traces of its history, through mankind's occupation and impact. Black and White Landscape Photoshoot – Homework Project Task 1: Take at least 30 photos of a range of different types of Landscapes. Think about experimenting with different types of lighting. Experiment with different times of the day. You may use a smartphone. Task 2: Select a photograph by a Fay Godwin and describe it in detail using the Formal Elements and the Photography Visual Analysis helpsheet. Explain how the photograph was taken, the quality and position of the light source and how these techniques inspired your own black and white landscape photography. • Double check that you are taking photos in the style of Fay Godwin. • Try to take a photo of fields or woodlands with no people present. • If you struggle to make the photographs black and white do not worry I can help you when we return to the Academy. Make the most of your photoshoot: • Plan: location, time of day, quality of light • Make a list of types of shot that you need • Make sure that you are able to upload your images • Take a look at the work of Ilker Karaman for inspiration
