Sample Introduction There is no doubt that differences exist between individuals who form part of a society, however, the idea of diversity as accepting those differences and respecting others, has not yet been completely achieved in our current society. In her novel To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee uses the experiences of Scout to explore the barriers that prevent society from achieving a complete state of diversity. Firstly, Lee suggests that complete acceptance is inhibited by prejudices that form barriers between individuals. The events of the novel also show the reader that these prejudices can spiral towards racism, which prevents individuals from understanding and appreciating others. Although Lee conveys the idea that both prejudices and racism prevent an individual from accepting differences between people, she also suggests that one way to overcome these pressures is to show courage and stand up for what is right in the face of adversity.
