ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 7 th - Horizons Ms. Darla Sasse 2020 -2021 COURSE SYLLABUS Contact Info: Room: A-31 darla. sasse@kerrvilleisd. net Conference Period: 8: 42 9: 30 Supplies • • • Composition Notebook Pocket folder w/brads Pencils Pens (blue or black, & red) Headphones Highlights (blue, yellow, pink, & green) Colored Pencils Scissors Glue Book for Independent Reading Course Description Horizon students will have increased rigor and be expected to direct their own studies more independently and with greater depth and complexity. Seventh grade Horizon students will read and respond to literature, make inferences, recognize the purpose of essential literary devices, and reflect on understanding to monitor comprehension. Students will determine the meaning of grade-level academic words. Students will utilize all steps of the writing process to develop different forms of writing for specific purposes and audiences, such as to express, reflect, influence, and communicate ideas. Through composition, students revise and edit drafts to clarify meaning and enhance style using their growing knowledge of grammar, mechanics and spelling. The COVID Effect • Wearing of a mask will be required • Social distancing must be maintained • We have a sink in class. Upon entering the room at the start of class, we will be washing our hands. • Hand sanitizer will be used when returning to the classroom from breaks or as needed.

“After nourishment, shelter, and companionship, stories are thing we need most in the world. ” – Philip Pullman Weighted Grades Grading Policies Daily (70%): • Tests and Projects (30%): • Late Work Late work will receive a deduction of 10 points per day up to a maximum of 30 points. If not submitted within 5 days, a grade of zero will be recorded in the gradebook. No late work will be accepted outside of a 6 weeks grading period. • • Absent Work missed in class may be made up. The student has two days for every day absent to complete the work. The student is responsible for getting their makeup work. • If classwork is not completed in class, it becomes homework unless told otherwise. Assignments are to be completed individually unless specifically assigned as group work. Academic honesty is expected at all times. Cheating and/or plagiarism may result in a grade of zero. A student shall be permitted a reasonable opportunity to redo an assignment or retake a test for which the student received a failing grade. This does not apply to incomplete or missing assignments. The semester exam will account for 10% of the final grade. Class Expectations BE PREPARED • Come to class on time. This means being in your seat at the start time, focused and ready to learn. • Come to class with the necessary supplies. BE RESPECTFUL • Respect yourself and others. • Respect our class time and our materials. DO YOUR BEST • Be responsible for your learning; work hard and do your best. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help or make mistakes.
