Battle of Petersburg � Significance: After fighting Lee for months, Grant was able to break Lee’s army after a nearly 300 day battle around Petersburg. This defeat will lead to the destruction of Richmond.
The War Ends In spring of 1865, Grant finally captured the Confederate Capital, Richmond � Lee hoped to escape to North Carolina but was finally trapped � Lee surrendered to Grant April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, VA � Considered the end of the Civil War �
