SETTING • LI: To develop our skills in creating an effective setting, in a dystopian story. SC: • I can identify the different elements of setting. • I can use these elements to write descriptively about setting. • I can create my own dystopian setting.
• TASK: WHAT IS SETTING? • What do you think a reader needs in a setting description? Make a list of what a good setting description includes. • TASK: • Take a few minutes to look round the room you are in and then describe the setting in as much detail as possible. Make sure that you include all five senses.
DYSTOPIAN SETTING EXAMPLES • Read the attached extracts and make notes or write down quotes of places where the writer brings the setting to life. • How does the writer make the setting effective? Annotate or note where the writer uses: The setting extracts are available on the website page. You can also listen to them here: • Weather • Location • Details of time setting • The five senses
YOUR DYSTOPIAN SETTING • From the examples we have looked at, dystopias can be set in a variety of world. From the past, to the present, to the future. Or you can create a world of your own where the laws are up to you! • TASK: • Choose your own setting and write in as much detail as you can. You should manage at least one good paragraph of detailed description. • Make it come to life and be as descriptive as possible. Remember to include: v The time setting v The place v The weather v The five senses
YOUR DYSTOPIAN SETTING – THE VISUALS • TASK: • When we write, it can be useful to draw upon places that we have been to, or places where we have a visual representation of what it might look like. Some writers rely upon illustrators and photographers to help them with this. Draw or create a collage of different images that show the dystopian world you want to write about. • If you don't know how to or can't make a picture collage on your computer, you can also send me the images you find as an attachment, or send me your screenshots.
HOW IS YOUR SETTING? TASK: Take another look at your setting. Or, even better – share your setting description with a friend, even if they aren't writing in the same genre as you. • What are two things you have done well in your setting description? • What is one thing you could do to improve this? Before you send your setting description to me, try acting on that feedback to make it even better!
