Do you ever look at something and think it looks like something else?
If so, you are on your way to becoming a good writer. Comparing things is a way of giving a clearer picture of it. 3 different devices or techniques use comparison: 1. Similes - they say something is “as” or “like” something eg. The car flashed past like lightning. 2. Metaphors – they imply something is like something eg. The plug was a brass hat in the hole. 3. Personification – this makes something non-living sound alive eg. The cheese grater grinned nervously.
Simile, Metaphor or Personifiction ? Write down next to each which device/technique is used in each. 1. It was as cold as ice. 2. I went through a rollercoaster of emotions. 3. The houses huddle together. 4. She is a cow in calf. 5. The windows stare. 6. He ran as fast as a cheetah. 7. He had eyes like a hawk 8. Time is a thief. 9. The teacher listened with a wooden face.
Good descriptions? Choose 3 descriptions on the last slide which you think work well. Copy out on the left and on the right say why you think it is good. Description Why it is good
Cleaning Ladies by Kit Wright Belly stuffed with dust and fluff It moos and drones Grazing down on the carpet pasture Cow with electric bones. 1. What is being described? 2. What is it being compared with? 3. This uses a metaphor but also uses another device/ technique. What?
The 2 nd verse of the poem is as follows: Up in the tree of a chair the cat Switches off its purr Stretches, blinks: a neat pink tongue Vacuum cleans its fur. 4. What is being described here ? 5. What is it compared with? 6. Do you think this is a good poem? Why/why not?
Your chance to shine Think of an object and see if you can describe it in a way which makes it sound like a person or think of an animal and describe it so it makes it sound like an object. Write your description on the next blank slide. eg. describe a car as if it’s a lion (first write down lots of words to do with lions and then use them to describe aspects of a car eg. roar, – the engine roars…) or describe a fox as if it’s a dustbin van (plan ideas first writing words to do with both things before creating sentences).
