ANDREAS-IASON MARIS B’ 3 INVENTIONS

WHAT ARE THEY? n An invention is a new composition, device, or process. An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea, or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough. In addition, there is cultural invention, which is an innovative set of useful social behaviors adopted by people and passed on to others. Inventions often extend the boundaries of human knowledge or experience. An invention that is novel and not obvious to others skilled in the same field may be able to obtain the legal protection of a patent.

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? DO YOU KNOW OF ANY FAMOUS INVENTORS? The most important Ancient Greek invention was the invention of True and not only Applied Science around 600 BC with Thales. But as more arts were invented, and some were directed to the necessities of life, others to recreation, the inventors of the latter were naturally always regarded as wiser than the inventors of the former, because their branches of knowledge did not aim at utility. Hence when all such inventions were already established, the sciences which do not aim at giving pleasure or at the necessities of life were discovered, and first in the places where men first began to have leisure. This is why the mathematical arts were founded in Egypt; for there the priestly caste was allowed to be at leisure. Aristotle Metaphysics.

ADHESIVE TAPE o Richard G. Drew (1899 -1980) invented masking tape and clear adhesive tape (also called cellophane tape or Scotch tape). Drew was an engineer for the 3 M company (the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing). o Drew's first tape invention was a masking tape made for painters in 1923 (this tape was designed to help painters paint a straight border between two colours). This early masking tape was a wide paper tape with adhesive on only the edges of the tape - not in the middle. Drew made an improved tape called Scotch (TM) Brand Cellulose Tape in 1930. This tape was a clear, all-purpose adhesive tape that was soon adopted worldwide. The first tape dispenser with a built-in cutting edge was invented in 1932 by John A. Borden, another 3 M employee.
