Nine Core Elements of Digital Citizenship 1. Digital Access • Digital access is having access to the digital world and taking full participation in it. There are people who have access and people who do not and this is called the digital divide. • A Socio-economic divide: • Often referred as people who have and people who do not have. It is usually affected with socio-economic factors such as affordability. • A Divide in Infrastructure: • Developed countries have up-to date infrastructure which can handle the ever-changing technology. Developing countries will possibly have older infrastructure. • A Divide in Content: • English dominates the internet. There is little information that is in other languages therefore people who do not understand English has limited information.

Digital Access (continued) • a Gender Divide: • In developing countries statistics show that women have less access/less on internet than men. • A Skill Divide: • Not many people have the skill to work on a computer. • The Universal Access Divide: • Those who are physically disadvantaged to work with computers. • To allow them to work on computers they will need special hardware and software but this may be too expensive for the person 2. Digital Commerce • Using technology for buying and selling of goods. Such as bidorbuy and gumtree.

Digital Communication • Communicate with other people through technology (e. g. instant messenger). • Exchange of information using technology such as sending files via email. • Allows people to gain different communication skills. 4. Digital Literacy • Your technological knowledge. We must teach and learn about technology to enhance our knowledge. 5. Digital Etiquette • Do not be rude when using technology e. g. do not sit at dinner constantly on your phone.

Digital Law • The new technology age has allowed us to break many laws without consequences. • The laws are difficult to enforce but when you do get caught there are consequences. 7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities • Use technology responsibly. We have the right to use it but we must obey the laws that follow when using technology. • With every right there is a responsibility. 8. Digital Health and Wellness • • The physical and psychological well-being when using technology. There are dangers such as internet addiction.

Determine each persons role based on their strengths and weaknesses. 4. Media Fluency • Listen actively and analyse the message from the media. 5. Information Fluency • Critically think while using information regardless of the platform the information used.
