Before achieving moral redemption, an individual must take a hard look at evil both in the world and in himself. Only by confronting inner evil can people achieve self-knowledge.

The Vestibule • The Gateway to Hell • The Indecisive: no real beliefs, those who don’t choose sides. • Not good or evil. Never make a stand for either side. • Charon guides souls across the river. • Acheron & Styx (in hell) • Forced to move constantly while being stung and bitten by wasps and flies for all eternity.

The First Circle • Limbo: Stuck between heaven and hell. • Who is here: Virtuous pagans & unbaptized infants. • Famous People stuck here: Homer, Socrates and Plato

The Second Circle • The Lustful • Minos sits in judgment • Famous Faces: Cleopatra, Paolo & Francesca • Blown about forever by stormy winds just as, in life, they were blown about by the winds of passion

The Third Circle The Gluttons

The Third Circle: The GLuttons Guarded by Cerberus Wallow in mud and muck Besieged by hail & filthy water

The Fourth Circle The Greedy & Wasteful They are divided into two groups, each pushing boulders against each other (symbolic of their mundane existence on earth, with sin punishing its opposite sin).

The Fifth Circle üThe Wrathful, Sullen, or Slothful üAttacking one another forever, trapped beneath the swampy water in the River Styx

The Sixth Circle • Heresy • atheists & Non-believers in the afterlife • Entombed in flaming graves for all eternity. • They believe the soul dies with the body, so that is their fate.

The 7 th Circle: VIOLENCE against God, his creations, and self Murderers are emmersed in boiling blood forever. Centaurs keep the violent from escaping.

Circle Eight: Frauds • Pimps, Panderers, Fortune-tellers, Flatterers, Hypocrites, Thieves, Evil Counselors, Deceivers, the Scandalous, Falsifiers. • Many different punishments for each.

Seducers – Run forever in opposite directions and are whipped by demons Flatterers – Lie up to their necks in human feces Sorcerers – Their heads are put on their bodies backward Hypocrites – Made to wear brightly painted lead cloaks Thieves – Chased by venomous snakes and who, after being bitten by the venomous snakes, turn into snakes themselves and chase the other thieves in turn Evil Counselors – Eternally trapped in flames Sowers of discord – Their bodies are ripped apart, healed, and then destroyed again Falsifiers – Alchemists, counterfeiters, and perjurers are cursed with disease

The Ninth Circle: Lowest Level of Hell ü The worst of those who betrayed their benefactors. ü Most are frozen up to their necks in ice, crying out for those they betrayed eternally. ü Home of Dis (Lucifer) who has 3 faces. Devours the worst of three betrayers daily in each mouth. ü Judas: Betrayer of Jesus Christ ü Brutus & Cassius: Betrayers of Julius Caesar

Journal Write • Look back at how you ranked the sins in your journal earlier. • 1. How does your ranking of sins compare to Dante’s? What are the biggest similarities and differences? • 2. How have our ideas about the severity of particular sins changed from Dante’s time to ours?

Canto 1 & 3 Reading! • Read answer the questions for Canto 1. NOT HOMEWORK- Get as far as you can today. • Hero’s Journey project due tomorrow. • Use the lit textbook to read in class, or you can find the reading posted under 10 th grade docs on my website.

Circles of Hell Project • Dante was able to create his own version of hell, now it’s your turn! • You will need to find a way to creatively display your own version of hell. This can be in the form of a poster, 3 D display, etc. How you demonstrate this is completely up to you. • Requirements: • Must have 9 circles of hell progressing in severity • Each circle must include the sin as well as a fitting punishment (SCHOOL APPROPRIATE) • Each circle must include a person that might belong there (celebrity, historical, literary, or political figure, etc. ) NO ONE THAT YOU KNOW PERSONALLY. • You will have tomorrow in class to work on this, as well as Monday. Due Tuesday
