CMPT 320 day Social Implications of a Computerized Society
Why are we taking this course? We want to know the effects of our chosen field. We are part of this society (even though sometimes we are stereotyped into a cult). Computer ethics. Are we responsible for what we create? We are “educated”, we are expected to be able to think critically (beyond computing/math).
How do I do well in the course? Read! Discuss! Answer the question posed! If you are in doubt, ask me! Be confident in your opinions, don’t simply regurgitate others work! Work consistantly, don’t let it pile up!
Late policy I don’t want to be unreasonable, but I also don’t want all of your papers at the end of the semmester. Everything is due at the BEGINNING of class. I will deduct 20% per week. I don't accept things in my mailbox. Try to get things in on time. Submit your papers on submission server.
Some definitions Science? Ans. The study of the physical and natural world through observation and experience. Technology? Ans. Application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes (Oxford) Computer? Ans. Who cares?
Definitions (2) Math? Numbers? What is the difference between Math and Science? Answer: Math is deductive, Sc is Inductive. Induction? Ans. Knowledge gained through experience.
Definitions (3) Deduction? Ans. Knowledge gained through logical implications. Computing/Computer Science? Engineering? Math? Science?
Some questions Who are responsible for the effects of computers/technology? Is Science objective? Does technology influence society or vice versa? Ans. We can look at society and technology and find evidence to both!
