God’s Works of Providence Reflect His Character/Name 1) Honor; Glory (v. 3 a) – These are attributes of royal dignity. 2) Eternal Righteousness (v. 3 b) Note how this character trait also applies to the upright (cf. 112: 3, 9) 3) Grace and compassion (v. 4 b) Note how these character traits also apply to the upright (cf. 112: 4)

Exodus 12: 12 -14 “For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. “Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. “So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance. ”

His “Wonderful Works” God Made Them to be Remembered (vv. 4, 5) His Works Connect His Character to His Covenant • His Angel performed the “Passover” (Ex. 12: 12 -13). • The children of Israel will continue to celebrate this feast, so that they would remember His grace and compassion in the covenant relationship (Ex. 12: 1314). Verse 5 • He gave food to the Israelites in the wilderness, exemplifying how He would always be faithful to fulfill His word to His people (Ex. 15 -17). • What “wonderful works” did God make for the Church to remember?

1 Corinthians 11: 24 -25 “Take, eat, this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me. ” “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. ”

The “Power of His Works” (v. 6) • God promised them an inheritance (Read Exodus 23: 20 -33) • God’s act of giving Israel the “inheritance (land) of the nations” (Canaan) caused them to know His power. • What is the Church’s “inheritance”?

The Church’s Inheritance “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will that we. . . should be to the praise of His glory. ” “. . . having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. ”

The “Works of His Hands”: God’s Precepts and God’s Works Proceed from His “Name” 1) His True, Just, Sure (Verified), and Eternally Steadfast Precepts (Word) Originate from His Holy and Awesome “Name” (vv. 7 -8 a, 9 c). (“Name” stands for His Person and the reputation He enjoys because of His works) [See Ex. 34: 5 -7]. 2) Precepts Done (Works) in Truth and Uprightness Reflect His “Name” (vv. 8 b, 9 c). 3) God’s “Name” (v. 9 c) Sent God’s Redemption (Works) [v. 9 a] and Ordained/Commanded His Covenant (Word) Forever [v. 9 b].

God’s Name/Character, His Word, and His Covenant God’s holy and fear-inspiring “Name”/character guarantees through His word that He will not and cannot break the covenant.

Biblical Fear and Wisdom Fear of the LORD – “A way of life based on a sober estimate of God’s presence and care. ” The first step toward acquiring ethical wisdom Hokmah – “The art of forming. . . successful plans. ” Knowledge acquired in order to negotiate life in a skillful, pious, and moral manner.
