The thinking of men turns to futility. Vanity, frivolity, folly, good-for-nothing notions … Aimless, hollow, fruitless, hopeless … Mental course leads to nothing worthwhile (Jeremiah 10 23; Romans 1: 21 -22).
Understanding becomes darkened. Clouded, shrouded with gloom … Unfruitful, shameful (Ephesians 5: 11 , 12). Transgression beclouds a sinner’s comprehension and disposition (John 3: 19 20).
Men are alienated from the life of God. Estranged, cut off, excluded … Separated, a stranger to, to be an alien … • Ephesians 2: 12 Sin estranges from life’s state of wellbeing.
Ignorance pervades within sinners. A lack of knowledge and perception of things pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1: 3). • 1 Corinthians 1: 20 -25 • Colossians 2: 8, 23
This digression leads to a blindness of the heart. Hardness, insensibility, obstinacy, closed … “A covering with a callus; covered with a stone” … When dulled, hard-skinned or petrified, man is insensitive toward sin and unreceptive of truth (Romans 1: 28; 1 Timothy 4: 2; 2 Thessalonians 2: 11 -12).
Hardness of heart ends with being past feeling. Lost all sense of shame, callous, recklessness, stifled their consciences, dead to all feeling … Sinners who feel no pain of conscience are apathetic regarding things of God (1 Peter 4: 3 -4; Revelation 9: 20 -21).
