Background to the annual report • Caring for Smiles data is reported annually. •

Background to the annual report • Caring for Smiles data is reported annually. • In previous years data was reported from October to September. • From this year onwards data will be reported by financial year. • We will continually review the data that is available ensuring that this is fit for purpose in demonstrating how the programme is progressing and the work being undertaken.

Participation in General Dental Services • Data for 2017 shows that 81. 4% of 64 – 74 year olds and 81. 2% of patients 75 years and over were registered with a dentist. • 74. 2% of patients 64 – 74 year olds and 62. 2% of patients 75 years and over participated in dental services (had contact with a GDP for an examination or treatment in the last 2 years) (Source: ISD, Dental Statistics – NHS Registration and Participation. Examples of new/different approaches GDS – PDS referral process. Improved data for referrals using a secure email. Raising awareness of priority group work during Childsmile GDP visits – helps to recruit dentists for the domiciliary lists. “Oral Care of Dependant Adults” module available on the learn-pro platform for all NHS staff. Pathway for dentists to refer care home residents/their carers to an Oral Health Educator for one-to-one input Deliver training to hospital Health Support Workers in ‘bite sized’ chunks during lunchtimes. Deliver accredited and non accredited training using the Creative Imaginative Learning programme Care related stress and distress training dvd pack Making training sessions as interactive as possible.

National Update • We have been in contact with Eat Well Age Well, which is looking at malnutrition in older people living at home. • Part of the Food Train charity. • Interested in doing a test of change around oral health. This is at a very early stage. • If anyone is interested in finding out more about a test of change in your area please let me know.
