Capturing Work Experience of Undergraduate Students Scarlett Xiao, Susan Murray, David Germany and David Ashall School of Engineering and Technology Zahra Carnochan, Graduate Futures v Overview v Implementation To meet the University target of 100% undergraduate students gaining work experience during their studies with UH in 2011/12, the School and consultants from Graduate Futures worked closely to develop a model of capturing and assessing students’ work experience and employability skills. The model was piloted with level 1 students in the School from 2009/10. The model has been discussed and approved by FAQEC and DAG, where students are expected to capture their work experience throughout the first and second year. Students will meet with their personal tutors once a term to discuss collecting evidence and to maintain their repositories of Work Experience Record Cards. v Rationale Work experience covers wide range of activities including: short term/part time work, voluntary work, student proctor, student guide, student representative and student ambassadorship, etc. Based on the evidence they collected, students are required to produce their employability portfolio at the beginning of the final year to demonstrate their achievements and construct personal plans for their chosen profession.
