What as a nation are we doing about it? • The Scottish Public Health Network; ‘Polishing the Diamonds – Addressing ACES in Scotland’, 2016 outlines key areas for action • Scottish Government; Aspirations for Scotland…to be an ACE Aware Nation – wider awareness and understanding to prevent and mitigate ACES • NHS Education for Scotland; National Trauma Training Plan for the Scottish Workforce • NHS Health Scotland; Hosts and coordinates Scottish Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Hub, dedicated webpages on ACEs, link national and local ACES Hubs/networks as well as other with other countries

What at a local level are we doing about it? • Lanarkshire Public Health Priority; Director of Public Health Annual Report 2018/2019 outlines new priorities for action on ACEs • Lanarkshire ACEs Hub; planning, coordinating action around raising awareness of ACEs • Awareness sessions: Award winning film - Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope (1998) - 57 x 2 hour sessions delivered across Lanarkshire - 1679 staff attended (Mar 2019) • Building Resilience and Connecting Communities We all have a part to play in building resilient communities

What do we know about ACEs and Smoking? • Experiencing ACEs is linked to a range of health harming behaviours • Experiencing 4 or more adversities in childhood; • 4 times more likely to smoke* • 4 times more likely to drink alcohol* • Correlation with health inequalities and smoking i. e. poverty/deprivation • Correlation with health inequalities and ACES i. e. poverty/deprivation * compared with someone with no experience of ACEs

What do we know about ACEs and Smoking? Contd… • If ACES are common

What do we know about ACEs and Smoking? Contd… • If ACES are common and, higher in areas of deprivation where there is higher rates of smoking; • We are likely to be supporting people in our stop smoking services who have experience of ACES and may need additional support (priority groups) • We are likely to be educating children on the effects of tobacco in the classroom who are experiencing ACES or their families have, and they may need additional support What does this mean for us working in Tobacco Control?
