100. Code of Safe Conduct, 117 Ladder Safety Rules for All Team Members SAFETY CODE Adhere to the following safety rules whenever you use a ladder: 1. Only use ladders with non-slip leg bases. 2. Inspect the ladder before using it. Look for cracked, broken, loose or split rungs or uprights. Check that all rungs and uprights are clean and free of moisture. Do not use a ladder that is not in good condition. 3. When you use a ladder in an area with vehicular traffic (such as a parking lot), block the traffic with a parked vehicle and warning cones. 4. Do not put a ladder where a door may open and strike it. 5. Before using a ladder, place the ladder on firm, level ground. Only use a ladder when wearing flat, rubber-soled shoes. Check your shoes before using a ladder. Be sure your shoes are clean and dry. Use both hands when climbing a ladder. Do not carry items up a ladder. You can raise materials by rope. Do not work on a ladder alone in an isolated area, because no one will be available to help if you fall. For single-upright ladders, extend the ladder at least 42 inches above the top of the wall against which you are leaning it. For single-upright ladders over-eight feet tall, tie them from the top to prevent movement. If doing work at a height of seven feet or more, get someone to assist you by securing the ladder as you climb and descend.
