overview fire protection system types Wet Pipe System is filled with water. During a fire, heat causes the sprinkler head element to burst, discharging water. Each sprinkler head is independent and reacts quickly to heat. Simplest and most common system design used in commercial applications Dry Pipe When wet pipe systems are at risk of freezing, dry pipe systems are recommended. Pipes are filled with pressurized air or nitrogen. When a sprinkler head is activated, air will be released, triggering the opening of a master valve which introduces water to the system Deluge The system is dry. The sprinkler heads do not contain the heat element, and are open. Once the master valve is triggered to open, water is introduced to the system and all the heads discharge water at once. The objective is to completely blanket the area with water Pre-action A dry system that is triggered by a fire or smoke detector. These systems are used in critical applications such as high value inventory or irreplaceable items are protected Foam For buildings that handle highly hazardous components and flammable liquids such as aircraft hangers, a foam blanket consisting of foam and water is discharged to completely envelop and extinguish the fire
Zurn fire protection components standpipe systems In North America, a standpipe is a type of rigid water piping which is built into multistory buildings in a vertical position or bridges in a horizontal position, to which fire hoses can be connected, allowing manual application of water to the fire. Within the context of a building or bridge, a standpipe serves the same purpose as a fire hydrant. Wet standpipe systems (70% of the market) A "wet" standpipe is filled with water and is pressurized at all times. In contrast to dry standpipes, which can be used only by firefighters, wet standpipes can be used by building occupants. Wet standpipes generally already come with hoses so that building occupants may fight fires quickly. This type of standpipe may also be installed horizontally on bridges. • Manual wet standpipe Must be supplemented by a fire department pumper truck via the fire department connection to achieve the necessary flow rates and pressure requirements at the most remote standpipe. • Automatic wet standpipe Does NOT need a supplemental water supply but can be properly operated with the water supply and equipment it was originally designed, typically with a fire pump to boost the city water supply pressure and achieve the required pressures at the most remote standpipe.
