ZOOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION
CLASSIFICATION: ITS BASIS Biological Classification is the ordered grouping of organisms according to their similarities & consistent with their inferred descent (Mayr & Ashlock, 1991) Therefor it is evident that grouping is dependent on TWO criteria A. Similarity & B. Sameness in causation
CLASSIFICATION: ITS COMPONENTS All entities coming under classification is ranked as TAXA (s. Taxon) It is distinct from the taxonomic categories (Genus, species etc. ) It is a hierarchical framework It is systematic structure with a sequence of classes (or sets) at different levels in which each class except the lowest include one or more subordinate classes
RULES OF CLASSIFICATION Organisms to be classified are assembled into classes based on similarities of attributes Individuals included in a class has members who share the greatest no of attributes Separate classes are established for organisms that are too different to be clubbed into previously established classes Classes, based on their degree of differences, are expressed by arranging them in a hierarchy of nested sets. In this hierarchy each leevl expresses certain level of distances
DOWNWARD CLASSIFICATION Method adopted by Cesalpino (1519 -1603) & by Linnaeus (1707 - 1778)
Based mainly on logical divisions Dividing larger group in dichotomy into subordinate groups People following this model is called ESSENTIALISTS (species reflects the existence of fixed ro unchanged type)
UPWARD CLASSIFICATION Emerged in the middle of 18 th century Specialization was more pronounced Classification became more hierarchical Search for a natural system was identified
KINDS OF CLASSIFICATION Preferring on one of the two sets of criteria, it is classified as Phenetics: gives weightage to similarity Cladistics: gives weightage to the list of descent
