Zoning Cities are made up of neighbourhoods which are often defined in part by their unique architectural character. Mississauga is distinguished by such neighbourhoods as Lorne Park, Port Credit, Streetsville Lakeview and each has their own distinctive architecture. Creativity and innovation are imperative to good architecture, but if new development strays too far from the established neighbourhood architecture, the result can be noncohesive streetscape and erosion of the "character" of the neighborhood. To combat this, municipal governments take steps to control architectural design in their neighbourhoods. These municipalities have established zoning bylaws and in the case of some neighborhoods, design guidelines that govern the appearance and shape of new buildings. This ensures a certain level of homogeneity and maintains a consistent neighbourhood character.
