Country of Origin ● Germany was the country behind developing the Zeppelin ● Count Ferdinand von Zeppelins ● 1900
How the Zeppelin was used? ● flown in the air ● used to drop bombs on enemies ● used for reconnaissance (exploration of an area to locate an enemy and their strategies)
How the Zeppelin Changed Fighting Techniques ● Zeppelins were the first weapons that used large scale aerial bombing. Used for the first strategic bombing campaign (1915). o Tactic could be used for: attacks on major cities, trench air raids, etc. o set the stage for more effective bombing by fixedwing airplanes o
The Impact of Zeppelins ● attacking troops on land was a lot easier ● poor accuracy on attacks so the wrong locations were targeted ● it was easily operated in the air ● immune from air attacks for some time because no other aircraft could fly as high
Impacts (cont. ) ● ● protected the seas and helped the navy navigation was poor so they got lost a lot psychological effect on enemies defenses created to be armed against zeppelins

Advantages ● they could fly higher than most planes, which caused them to make little to no noise while flying ● they could carry a lot of heavy bombs ● they were intimidating to their enemies due to their size ● they were hard to shoot down because of their altitude
Disadvantages ● maps that were drawn from images 'on the ground' the landscape rarely matched. ● airships were prone to getting lost and would bomb the wrong targets. ● With dropping bombs, winds tended to blow the bombs off targets.
Disadvantages (cont. ) ● extremely slow compared to modern jets ● made out of hydrogen gas which is highly flammable ● biggest problem: size ● As size increases the problems of ground handling increases
Improvements of the Zeppelin ● triangular girders on LZ-2 improved rigidity and strength ● 80 hp Daimler engines gave LZ-2 speed to maneuver in light winds ● LZ-3 & LZ-4 had huge improvements in controllability, power, speed, range, and payload. ● Large horizontal fins and elevators provided greater pitch control and stability and they were capable of producing aerodynamic lift. ● They were able to have longer and more reliable flights.
Zeppelin Fun Facts ● The first zeppelin LZ 1 was built in floating hangar on the Bodensee but now known as Lake Constance. It flew in July 1900 ● On May 6, 1937 the Hindenburg burst into flames while attempting to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey ● this fiery disaster ended the era of commercial airship travel
