The Maze Runner Who has seen the movie or read the book? Who can tell us a little bit about the story? What do you think of the maze? What are the first words that pop into your head when you think of the word “maze” Do you think mazes have an artistic element? How so?

A little bit of history… The first ever maze (also referred to as labyrinth) built was in the 5 th century BCE At one time Egypt was divided into 12 kingdoms The 12 kings came together and decided to build a temple, surrounded by a maze, as a way for future generations to remember them

A little bit of history… One of the most famous mazes is the Cretan Labyrinth According to legend every year King Aegeus had to give a human sacrifice to King Minos The sacrifices were place in a maze with a minotaur and were inevitably eaten King Aegeus’ son, Theseseus, volunteered one year in order to try to kill the minotaur He succeed by laying twine as he travelled through the maze so he could find his way back after slaying the beast

A little bit of history… Mazes are a part of our history and can be found all over the world Sometimes they are in gardens, under cathedrals, or seasonal like corn mazes A maze can be as simple or complex as the designer wants it to be. The only requirement for a maze is a way in and a way out

Mazes in the future? The maze runner is set in the future. Do you think mazes will continue to be built in the future? What function do you think they will play in future societies?

Your assignment Design your own maze Consider the elements of arts and principles of design such as… Pattern Line Shape Contrast Balance Space You will make a copy of your final maze design and fill in the positive space on one, and the negative space on the other You will decorate the positive and negative space with a cool pattern technique called Zentangles Your two designs will be mounted on black paper and displayed together

Your assignment Zentangles are mini, abstract works of art, created by tangling simple patterns into each other. Start with simple shapes and patterns, add lines around them that flow into other patterns. Have fun and experiment!
