FACTS: • more than 13 million children in the U. S. , aged 6 to 17, are victims of cyber bullying. • 1/3 of all teens and 1/6 of all pre-teens have had mean, threatening or embarrassing things written about them online. • Two million-plus don't ever tell anyone— a teacher, a parent, a sibling, a friend. Effects of bullying: It can mess up a child’s future • Those WHO BULLY are more likely to skip or drop out of school, as well as, smoke, drink alcohol, get into fights, and vandalize property. 60% of boys who bully in middle school had at least ONE CRIMINAL CONVICTION by the age of 24 (Olweus, 1993). • Those who ARE BULLIED may stay home on any given day because they’re afraid of being bullied (Pollack, 1998). EXAMPLES OF CYBER BULLYING: One of the more recognized instances of cyber bullying occurred when Eric Harris, one of the killers in the Columbine High School Massacre, put up a web site where he discussed murdering his fellow students, although no action was taken against Harris by the authorities at the time. TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST CYBER BULLYING: • Guard your contact information. • Do not send a message when angry. • If harassed, do not reply. Log out and tell an adult immediately. • Save harassing messages and forward to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or cell phone/pager provider. • Protect yourself—Never arrange to meet with someone you meet online unless your parents go with you. If you are meeting them make sure it is in a public place. • You may need to delete your current e-mail accounts, cell phone/pager accounts and set up new ones. • If physically threatened call the police.
