Youth Subcultures
What is Youth? According to sociologists, youth is a social construct, as the time period and behaviour associated with it is different across different cultures. Youth used to refer to teenagers, but some sociologists have pointed out that for some children, youth appears to be starting earlier The term tweens has been applied to 7 -12 years olds – the culture of media and celebrity is leading to what some sociologists have referred to as the disappearance of childhood. But youth is also extending longer. More people in their 20’s are now still dependent on their parents, and the average that people marry and get their own home is increasing.
What is a youth subculture? A subculture is defined as a culture within a culture, which has its own distinct norms and values, as well as being part of the wider culture. Youth subcultures are distinct groups of youths within the wider youth culture who stand out in terms of their style, dress, musical taste and attitudes.
