Objectives • Today we are going to learn about … – The relationship between health and wellness. – Keeping your physical, mental/emotional, and social health in balance.
Quick Write • Think about what the word “health” means to you. – Make a list of all the things you associate with being healthy. – Share your list with the class. – How similar was your list compared to those created by your classmates?
What is health? • Health is a combination of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. – Physical health = the condition of your body. – Mental and emotional health = your thoughts and feelings. – Social health = the way you relate to other people.
Maintaining Your Health Balance • Being healthy means keeping your health triangle in balance. • Here are some ways to work on all three sides of your health triangle: • Physical: Get regular physical activity, eat nutritious foods, and get enough rest. • Mental/emotional: Take time to study, to think, and to express your feelings in healthy ways. • Social: Spend time with both family and friends.
continued … • Remember! Changes you make to one side of your health triangle will also affect the other two sides. – For example, if you spend more time playing sports, your physical health will improve. – This will also help you feel better about yourself, improving your mental health.
Ways to Improve Your Physical Health • Playing sports like soccer, football, Frisbee, badminton, baseball, etc. • Lifting weights • Going for a jog or a bike ride • Hiking • Eating healthy foods
Wellness • Wellness is a state of balanced health. – To maintain wellness, try to protect and improve your health.
Personal Health Activity • Take this personal health inventory to find out if you have a clear and accurate view of your own health. • Think about the following statements and respond with “yes” or “no”.
Physical Health 1. ) I get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
