WATERSHED FINALE Review of the watershed activity
WHAT IS A WATERSHED? A watershed is an area of land where all water sources drain into a single water source, often a river or possibly a lake Several smaller watersheds can make up a single larger one Includes all wetlands, run-off sources, ground water, tributaries, etc.
WHAT ARE WETLANDS? “Wetlands areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season. ” (EPA website) The chemistry of the soil and the plants/animals that make their homes in wetlands are highly variable and depend upon the wetland.
CATEGORIES OF WETLANDS Tidal wetlands are found along the coasts, where the fresh water from inland begins to mix with the salt water of the sea
CATEGORIES OF WETLANDS Inland wetlands are found inland from the coasts and are highly variable “Non-Tidal wetlands are most common on floodplains along rivers and streams, in isolated depressions surrounded by dry land, along the margins of lakes and ponds, and in other low-lying areas…. Inland wetlands include marshes and wet meadows dominated by herbaceous plants, swamps dominated by shrubs, and wooded swamps dominated by trees. ” (EPA website) Wet meadows and wet prairies are the most common type of these found in the Mid-West Bogs an fens are common to the North-East states and Alaska Inland saline and alkaine marshes and riparian wetlands in the South-West Swamps in the South
