YMCA MSMUN 2020 WHAT IS MSMUN? MSMUN is Middle School Model United Nations. At the MSMUN conference, you debate world issues like diseases, human rights, terrorism, and more, all while representing one of the 193 countries that are part of the United Nations. 2

YMCA MSMUN 2020 What is the United Nations? MSMUN is a simulation of the United Nations. The UN is a group of 193 countries, and it was founded in 1945 to maintain international peace and security. These countries meet in different committees, where they discuss and decide how to fight problems like inequality, hunger, child mortality, and poverty. 3

YMCA MSMUN 2020 Step 2 Once you have your country, pick a committee to be in. Every committee has a different issue they will discuss.

YMCA MSMUN 2020 If you are in an advanced committee, you represent your country by yourself. If you are in an introductory committee, you partner up with someone else in your group and work as a team at the conference. If you have some debate experience, try being advanced and going alone! If you’re not sure, ask your advisor and they can help you decide. Remember - one type of committee is not better than the other! Pick where you are most comfortable. What’s the difference between advanced and introductory? 9

YMCA MSMUN 2020 Do I have to do any work for MSMUN? Yes, but it’s not a lot! As you can probably tell, the topics are rather complex, so you may need to do some research to understand what the topics is talking about. Luckily, all the committees have topic guides, which explain what the topic is and what you should think about when doing your research. To help you know what your country thinks about the topic, you are supposed to write a position paper. A position paper is a couple paragraphs about your topic and your country’s view on it. This is easy to write, because your advisor has a Delegate Guide that explains what you need to say in your paper and they can give to you. Make sure to get your committee's topic guide and the delegate guide from your advisor, or go to http: //www. shsmun. org/msmun-2020 to get them. 10

YMCA MSMUN 2020 Step 3 Go to the conference! You’ll need to research your committee and the topic you will discuss a bit, but once you are at MSMUN, you will focus on writing resolutions, which have recommendations for how to solve the problem.

YMCA MSMUN 2020 Deadlines (Suggested)* February 18: Tell your advisor you have a group and want a country. February 23: Pick what committee you will be so you have plenty of time to do your research. March 1: Turn in your $20 fee to your advisor. March 10: Turn in your position paper. *Please edit based on what is best for your school! 12
