O Brief Description: For this assignment, I did research on the contemporary educational issue of year-round schooling. I collaborated with a partner to research the different perspectives in on the topic. In addition, we made a list of pros and cons about year-round schooling. O Rationale To document my understanding of standard #5, Application of Content: ü I listed the different perspectives of year-round schooling. ü Came up with two questions for our audience, allowing us to creatively discuss our topic.

What is year round schooling? O A modified schedule for teachers and students that involves attending school all year. O There are frequent 3 -4 week breaks throughout the year. O School year ends with a 5 week summer break O School year has same amount of school days as a traditional school, just organized differently. This avoids any extended vacation time.

Pros =) O Families that have a hard time finding child care will benefit O Supports continuous learning O This helps students detain the material and learn continuously. O Less time for kids to get in trouble O Students and teachers have less stress O Due to frequent breaks

Pros =) O There are more afterschool activities offered throughout the year for students O Research has shown that other countries use this system successfully. O Gives families opportunity to take many small trips throughout the year, instead of one long trip once a year.

Cons =( O Maintenance becomes more expensive O The two week breaks every 6 weeks can be disruptive O Easy for students to get distracted and not complete regular school work O Higher utility bills all throughout the year O Teens are not able to get summer jobs O Can’t help out family

Cons =( O Summer camps would not be an option for kids O Kids missing out on camps related to what they enjoy O Example: science camps, cheerleading camps, overweight/exercis e camps. O Family time is cut back since kids are always in school
