Pica A graphical measurement equaling 1/6 of an inch. Pica Inch
Point The basic measurement system used to measure the size of type. There are 12 points to a pica, 72 points to an inch. Pica Point
double page spread Two facing pages in a yearbook that are designed to appear as one cohesive design.
Bleed A picture taken past the external margin on the page, extending off the page.
cob Cut out background. . . a photo that has the background cut out.
eyeline NEVER in the middle of the An imaginary page single pica of white space that flows horizontally across a double page spread. Its purpose is to unify both pages into one visual element.
column design A technique of dividing up your spread into small columns and following the rules of every element beginning and ending on a column and keeping consistent interior margins.
Dominant element The largest element on your spread, usually an interesting photo/headline combination.
primary headline The largest type on your page. Works with the dominant photo to draw attention and create interest.
secondary headline Used to make a blend between a headline and a story, usually very enticing to readers.
caption Text near a photo that tells about the photo and the people pictured. 1 st = present tense & tells who is doing what 2 nd = past & gives background info 3 rd = quote from someone in pic
gutter A two pica space between the left and right page on a double page spread.
folio Information that helps the reader know their location in the book, like page number, section, etc.
lead in A mini-headline for a caption, which catches the attention of the reader and gives a brief hint of the topic.
