Commas are used to separate items in a list or to separate parts of a sentence. A comma should be used when a subordinate clause comes before a main clause. ,
Main clauses A main clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb that makes sense by itself. E. g. We all went home. subject verb E. g. Our team won the game. subject verb
Subordinate clauses A subordinate clause is a group of words containing a verb that depends on the main clause to make sense. They often start with a subordinating conjunction. E. g. because it was dark A relative clause is a type of subordinate clause that adds information about a noun/noun phrase. They often start with a relative pronoun. Commas to separate clauses Commas are also often used to punctuate relative clauses. These may be positioned after or in the middle of a main clause.
