Year 9 Term 6: English Find, write down and learn the definition of the following terminology: simile, personification, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, sibilance, emotive language, pathetic fallacy, allusion, juxtaposition, oxymoron, euphemism Read a news article of your choice from the BBC or The Guardian website, or from a newspaper. Identify five words that you don’t know the meaning of. For each word: 1) Find the word in a dictionary or Google its meaning 2) Use a thesaurus or Google to find a synonym (a word with similar meaning) 3) Write a sentence using each word correctly. Create a mind map of everything you remember about theme of women from ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Try to mention: Lady Capulet, Lady Montague, Juliet, the Nurse, Rosaline, patriarchal society, stereotypes. Include at least five key quotations about theme of love. If you struggle with this, use your booklet that you took home, the website ‘Shmoop’ or Mr Bruff’s You. Tube page. At the start of Year 10, we will be reading and studying the play ‘An Inspector Calls’; this task will help you prepare for that. Below, you will find the play’s opening stage directions and information about the play’s setting. Read this information and then 1) Identify/list the items or hints in the stage directions which imply that the family are wealthy/privileged. 2) Based on the stage directions, create a diagram or model representing the play’s set – what would it look like on stage? It is an evening in spring, 1912. ACT ONE The dining-room is of a fairly large suburban house, belonging to a prosperous manufacturer. It has a good solid furniture of the period. The general effect is a substantial and heavily comfortable but not cosy and homelike. […] (The lighting should be pink and intimate until the INSPECTOR arrives and then it should be brighter and harder). At rise of curtain, the four BIRLINGS and GERALD are seated at the table, with ARTHUR BIRLING at one end, his wife at the other, ERIC downstage, and SHEILA and GERALD seated upstage. EDNA, the parlourmaid, is just clearing the table, which has no cloth, of the dessert plates and champagne glasses, etc. , and then replacing them with decanter of port, cigar box and cigarettes. Port glasses are already on the table. All five are in evening dress of the period, the men in tails and white ties, not dinner-jackets. ARTHUR BIRLING is a heavy-looking, rather portentous man in his middle fifties with fairly easy manners but rather provincial in his speech. His wife is about fifty, a rather cold woman and her husband's social superior. SHEILA is a pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with life and rather excited. GERALD CROFT is an attractive chap about thirty, rather too manly to be a dandy but very much the well-bred young man-about-town. ERIC is in his early twenties, not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive. At the moment they have all had a good dinner, are celebrating a special occasion, and are pleased with themselves. Challenge/Extension: Read the articles below and add to your notes about the stage directions in ‘An Inspector Calls’ that you have made for the final task: https: //www. bbc. co. uk/bitesize/guides/z 2 rjfrd/revision/4 https: //getrevising. co. uk/diagrams/stage-directions-in-an-inspector-calls Please email kegan@staldhelms-academy. co. uk with any questions.
