YEAR 8: Week beginning Monday 8 th June In this document you will find all the tasks your subject teachers have asked you to complete this week. On the next slide is a timetable template – you may wish to organise your week and plan out when you will do each subject. REMEMBER you can be flexible with this and put in breaks when you need them. On the slides after this you will see a list of the tasks you need to complete. There also lots of extra resources/booklets/tasks on the school website which will help you with your work. Subject Tasks to complete this week… English This term, we are going to read ‘Private Peaceful’. There is a copy on the website on the Year 8 Home Learning page under ‘English’ or you can email Miss Egan kegan@staldhelms-academy. co. uk and she can email you a copy. Learn the following spellings by making sure you know what they mean, writing them out repeatedly, testing yourself or getting someone else to test you, and putting them in to your own sentences: omission, operate, optimism, original, ought, paid, parallel, particularly, peculiar, perceive, perform, permanent, persevere, personally, persuade, picture, piece, planning, pleasant, political 2. Read a news article of your choice from the BBC or The Guardian website, or from a newspaper. Identify five words that you don’t know the meaning of. For each word: 1) Find the word in a dictionary or Google its meaning 2) Use a thesaurus or Google to find a synonym (a word with similar meaning) 3) Write a sentence using each word correctly. 3. Read Chapter 3 (Nearly Quarter Past Eleven) of ‘Private Peaceful’ and answer the questions below: o ‘He’d tell Mother. He told Mother everything. ’ Who is this quotation about? o Who knows how to do the poaching? o Who ‘always lied well’? o Who gets ‘puffed up with self-importance. Aglow with it’? o ‘She always looked grey and grim’. Who? o Who do Charlie and Tommo pray for? o Who says they ‘never want tomorrow to come because no tomorrow could be as good as today’? o Who looked ‘gruff and unkempt’? o Who says ‘I had never been so happy? ’ Why? o What fortune does Molly tell? 4. Read Chapter 4 (Ten to Midnight) of ‘Private Peaceful. ’ Challenge/Extension: Look again at the openings to each chapter so far. 1) Why do you think Morpurgo has chosen to have chapter openings set in the present tense? Using quotations to help you, what do you think is happening to Tommo as he narrates this part of the story? 2) What happens after the introductory section within each chapter? What do we call this? 3) What is the importance of the chapter names? In your opinion how do they add to the story?
