Subject Tasks to complete this week… English This term, we are going to read ‘Private Peaceful’. There is a copy on the website on the Year 8 Home Learning page under ‘English’ or you can email Miss Egan kegan@staldhelms-academy. co. uk and she can email you a copy. You could also listen to the audio version here: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=CVE 9 Ogy 2 ILU (search Mr Davis Private Peaceful on You. Tube) or you could buy your own copy of the book from Amazon – there are used copies on there for £ 2 -£ 3. 1. Find, write down and learn the definition of the following terminology: noun, adjective, verb, adverb, pronoun, determiner, conjunction, preposition. Pick three random sentences from any text (a newspaper, a website, another piece of work you have completed) and see if you can label every word in each sentence with this terminology. 2. Read a news article of your choice from the BBC or The Guardian website, or from a newspaper. Identify five words that you don’t know the meaning of. For each word: 1) Find the word in a dictionary or Google its meaning 2) Use a thesaurus or Google to find a synonym (a word with similar meaning) 3) Write a sentence using each word correctly. 3. Read Chapter 11 (Nearly Four O’Clock), Chapter 12 (Five to Five) and Chapter 13 (One Minute to Six) of ‘Private Peaceful’. 4. Think about the ending of the novel and the following questions: • Why did Morpurgo title each chapter with a time? What happens to this time throughout the novel? What is it counting down to? • Through Charlie’s story, the author explores the idea of fairness. What was fair or unfair in these events? What other events in previous chapters have been unfair? How does this unfairness affect the reader at this part of the story? • On his return to camp his fellow soldiers are standing to attention. What does this tell Tommo about their feelings for his brother? How does this affect the closing moments of the story? • Tommo is left reflecting on his promise to his brother. Morpurgo chooses to leave Tommo on the frontline. Why do you think he does this? What do you think will happen next for Tommo? What significance should we attach to the fact that he will shortly go to the Somme? Challenge/Extension: • Find out/revise the definition of cowardice and bravery. • Look at the events below from the book: which are the most cowardly and which are the bravest? Explain your answers.
