YEAR 7: Week beginning Monday 13 th July In this document you will find all the tasks your subject teachers have asked you to complete this week. On the next slide is a timetable template – you may wish to organise your week and plan out when you will do each subject. REMEMBER you can be flexible with this and put in breaks when you need them. On the slides after this you will see a list of the tasks you need to complete. There also lots of extra resources/booklets/tasks on the school website which will help you with your work. Subject Tasks to complete this week… English This term, we are going to read ‘Coraline’ by Neil Gaiman. There is a copy on the website on the Year 7 Home Learning page under ‘English’, you can access a copy on Teams, or you can email Miss Egan kegan@staldhelms-academy. co. uk and she can email you a copy. Tube) or there are new and used copies online for £ 5 -£ 6. 1. Complete one hour of Bedrock – email kegan@staldhelms-academy. co. uk if you need a reminder of your username/password. 2. Find, write down and learn the definition of the following terminology: simile, personification, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, sibilance, emotive language, pathetic fallacy, oxymoron 3. Read a news article of your choice from the BBC or The Guardian website, or from a newspaper. Identify five words that you don’t know the meaning of. For each word: 1) Find the word in a dictionary or Google its meaning 2) Use a thesaurus or Google to find a synonym (a word with similar meaning) 3) Write a sentence using each word correctly. 4. There is a film version of ‘Coraline’ – you may be able to find it online, or you can buy it the DVD on Amazon for £ 3 -£ 4. It’s a very good adaptation if you can watch it! Y o If you have been able to watch the film, consider the following questions: o Do the characters look as you imagined? o What about their voices and accents? o How has the plot been changed? o Do the filmmakers create a scary atmosphere? How? o Does animation work well as a medium for the story? Why/why not? o Which is better, the film or the book? Why? Challenge/Extension: Complete any of the following tasks: • Read another Neil Gaiman novel – we really like ‘The Graveyard Book’! • Read Neil Gaiman ‘Why I Wrote Coraline’ – search it on Google and it is the first result - it is also at the end of the PDF copy on the website/Teams along with a Question and Answer session with the writer! • Create or plan a ‘Coraline’ game – you could use comic strip illustrations if you want to create a video game, or you could draw out a board game version. Point, Simplifying Science Use the instruction sheet to design an Antarctic research station. You can find facts about the conditions scientists working in Antarctica have to face using the links provided. Your station design can be drawn on a piece of paper and then photographed, or designed using a computer. Upload all finished work to Teams or email to your teacher. Sticky tape. Marbles. Can you build a run that keeps the marble going for at least a minute? The brief - Use a cardboard box and cardboard struts to create a marble run. The marble must run for 60 seconds. The method 1. Use sticky tape to attach the cardboard struts to the cardboard box, creating a run for the marble. 2. Place the marble at the top of the run and time how long it takes for it to reach the bottom. 3. Keep improving your design until the marble takes exactly 60 seconds to reach the bottom. Top tip If you can’t find cardboard struts, make your own by folding strips of cardboard in half to create a V shape.
