Mathematics at P. G. S. In Year 7 and 8 students study the fundamental skills required for success at GCSE level. We focus on the students mastering each topic with the aim of acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. We also want to foster an enjoyment of the subject, building on previous positive experiences of maths in some, and hopefully igniting a passion in others.

2. Deep Learning • Students will be encouraged to be inquisitive about each mathematical concept. • We aim to establish understanding of why mathematical concepts work as opposed to just learning quick fixes or methods. • In lessons students will spend periods of time working independently, in silence to aid them in structuring their mathematical thoughts.

3. Problem Solving Tasks • Students will be given the time to use their maths skills to explore real world problems. • These tasks will be more open-ended problems and will require more in-depth thinking and exploration of the subject. • The students will have chance to collaborate with their peers to discuss and combine their ideas. • The aim is to encourage resilience and team-work whilst providing a challenging and enjoyable scenario that tests their skills.

4. Home Learning: Hegarty Maths • We use the website Hegarty Maths for homework.

4. Home Learning: Hegarty Maths • We use the website Hegarty Maths for homework. www. hegartymaths. com • Students are required to watch a video, make notes from the video, then take an online quiz. • The students have instruction on how to complete the home learning stuck into their books. • It allows students to develop their independence and research skills. • Students will receive a Hegarty Maths task weekly.
