Year 7 Design & Technology Rational These 4 hours of teaching and 1 hour homework is a great way of teaching ‘creativity’ in the new national curriculum. No matter how much wealth of resources you have, this scheme can be developed further with whatever equipment you have available.
Outcome • This project allows students to develop creative skills when developing a typographic design for a gift paper of their choice - please see the design brief in lesson 1. • This project can be developed so they can research printing techniques used in industry to manufacture gift paper (Focus education ES graphics is a useful resource, you can download it for a 30 day trial). • The project can also be developed so they design the typographic design using C. A. D. facilities. These two opportunities for development allows more of the new curriculum to be covered (2 h, 3 j, 4 b, 4 c, 4 e)
How this project fits into the new national curriculum These 5 hours cover the following aspects of the New national curriculum: Key Concepts. Designing and making: 1. 1 a Cultural Understanding: 1. 2 b Creativity: 1. 3 a, 1. 3 b, 1. 3 c Critical evaluation: 1. 4 a, 1. 4 b Key processes. 2. a Range and content. 3. b Curriculum Opportunities. 4. a, 4. d
What to do with underperforming students Reason Solution Preferred learning style not taught. Students need to feel secure to be confident and creative, I would advise that each lesson, use the Powerpoint presentations and ‘explain’ good and bad points about students’ work (on the slides); teacher draws an example on board with class interaction. Give students a copy of the Powerpoint handout so they can review typographic qualities at their own pace. Weak ability Instead of giving them a booklet of all typographic qualities, give them a smaller selection for inspiration. Students who prefer discussions with peers than achieving target levels. Create a seating plan, allowing students of the same target level to work together – this allows the teacher to monitor progress easily in lessons, check students are on task, students can easily help each other. Underachieving boys, also fit into this category, ensure they are creating the gift paper for an occasion they have interest in.
