Year 7 Art and Design Lesson 5 Summer Term 2 Illustration Content: This term the Art links and follows on from the research into Illustrator Quentin Blake and street artist “The Dog Signs”. Lasts term work was focused on developing the skills of Observation and drawing to scale. This term the work is focused on the skills of being able to select appropriate resources to design their character to illustrate a message. In lesson 5 students will recall previous knowledge of using the formal elements to create different styles of artwork to illustrate text or support a message. Learning Objective: To design a character to illustrate a Coronavirus cell. Tasks: Watch the video links or draw features from resource sheet to build the cell shape. Use prior knowledge and draw the cell shape using the guidelines and idea sheets provided. Add other shapes to build the character of the cell and to show the cell mood. Questions for parents to support learning: • Parents to check that students are completing work weekly. • Parents can ensure students are looking closely at the resources provided to help generate their ideas. • Parents can ask students why they are selecting the shapes used. Why do you need to draw lightly sketched lines first? (so that you can rub it out easily if you don’t like it)? How will you know what mood the coronavirus cell is showing? Can you think of the colour that the coronavirus cell could be? Why that colour? Where would the darkest tone be on your cell to make the features stand out? (in the mouth, around the eyes) Why? • Encourage students to consider if the eyes stand out enough against the mid tone of the face. • • • Ask students what formal elements are used to create their cell character (lines, tone, colour, 3 D form, shape, space and texture) Why? What style of line is used to create the outline? (thin, thick, curved, broken) Which part is the main focus on the cell? (eyes, mouth, spikes. . ) Why? • Parents are to check students are referring to the examples provided for support.
