Year 6 Writing: Children will write a persuasive information leaflet to persuade people to visit a unique festival. They will look at examples of existing festivals before creating their own. They will also have the opportunity to create a small piece of writing focused around the book ‘Holes’. Term Summer 1 Express: Children will have an opportunity to design a unique festival of their own which they can sell to the class through their persuasive writing. Experience: As a final celebration, the children will recreate their own Day of the Dead festival and will have the opportunity to taste some authentic Mexican food. PE: In PE children will develop their physical skills by performing a variety of movements across a range of activities. They will also focus on their static balance skills and jumping and landing. They will then apply this to a game situation. Hola Mexico! Art/DT: We will be creating art inspired by the Mayan’s. Children will develop their sketching skills and create individual pieces influenced by the Mexican culture. ICT: Children will develop knowledge of webpages and search engines during their ICT time. Maths: This half term we will be focusing on shape and statistics. Children will learn about the properties of 2 D and 3 D shapes and recap on the different types of angles. They will also be able to read and interpret a variety of graphs. Children will also have a chance to practise their arithmetic skills once a week. Science Children will develop their knowledge of light and shadow. They will learn to use a periscope and create their own. Geography: We will use world maps to locate major cities and tourist locations in Mexico. Children will also begin to understand geographical similarities and differences between the countries. PSHE: Children will learn to develop their resilience and organisation skills. They will use their reflective skills to be honest with themselves and see how they can improve in these areas. Music: Children will be exposed to a range of highquality music drawn from different traditions and great composers.

Things to explore with your child! Science: Google Hand Shadows at home; there is a wealth of examples on-line. Experiment with your own hand shadows and write a short dialogue between some of the characters you create. Maths: During maths lessons this half term, the children will be learning to: - State the properties of 2 D and 3 D shapes - Read a variety of graphs - Name and calculate angles Encourage your child to explore shapes and angles at home-which ones can you find? Reading: Read a range of books with your child, talking to them about the type of book they are reading. Look at newspapers together and discuss stories of interest. Daily reading and learning of spellings is also very important to ensure continued progress. Please fill in their reading passports each day and send them in to school with your child. PE: Arctic – Tuesday and Wednesday Atlantic and Pacific – Tuesday and Thursday. Writing: Research key information about the Day of the Dead Festival-what ideas could you bring to our shared writing in class? Talk at home about what you think life would be like in Mexico. Create a setting description of what it would be like to live in the desert in Mexico.
