Year 6 – SUMMER TERM – CAPTURING IMAGES CORE TEXT: Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk A young girl’s kindness, compassion and honesty overcome bullying in 1940’s America. We will be answering the question: “Do all images reflect reality? ” “The Narrative is powerful, complex and lifelike…Thematically, this book raises some of the same issues as To Kill a Mockingbird, but with social status other than racism as the basis for injustice…VERDICT: Highly recommended…; a truly moving debut” – School Library Journal. English: We will learn the features, structure and layout of the following text types through reading and discussion: -narrative, instructions, balanced arguments and non-chronological reports. We will then plan, write and edit. At the end of each half term there will be an assessed piece of writing. Guided reading sessions will cover a range of text types and we will be learning to answer questions that are written in a variety of ways. Events: The residential trip will take place after SATs. Mathematics: We will be focussing on the properties of 2 D shapes and 3 D shapes at the beginning of the term and then using our skills and knowledge across all areas of the maths curriculum to solve various problems. Towards the end of the year we will be undertaking openended mathematical investigations and doing some units of work as preparation for Secondary School. Science: Following on from last term’s work on Evolution and Inheritance we will be learning about how living things adapt to their habitats. We will investigate similarities and differences between classes of animals and look at how scientists have attempted to classify different species; this will include research on the Linnaean System of classification. Later in the term we will be investigating various animals (including humans) and looking at how oxygen and nutrients are circulated around and passed through the body. This will be concluded with an investigation into the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way our bodies function.

Humanities subjects: As Historians the children will be investigating the ancient civilisation of The

Humanities subjects: As Historians the children will be investigating the ancient civilisation of The Indus. They will use a range of pictures, artefacts and secondary resources to explore everyday life of the Indus people, where they lived and how their civilisation grew and ended. During the 2 nd half of the term the children will study the history of images , how they help us to learn about history and using their deduction and inference skills to place images in chronological order. As well as this exploration they will look at the development of photography starting with the pin-hole camera and researching how technology in cameras has advanced over time. The children will then select a historical image and develop their own line of enquiry. In RE we will be summarising their learning of different religions over their time in Primary School by comparing the similarities and differences in the central beliefs of the 6 main religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism). As the children move towards Secondary School they will study a unit called “Moving ON”. They will learn how to manage change and new roles and responsibilities as they grow up. They will learn about the human life cycle and the changes that will occur as they grow towards adulthood. They will be taught in an age appropriate way about human reproduction and how adults start to form relationships. Computing: The children will be coding using “Micro-bits”, a BBC resource. They will be designing and debugging simple algorithms. Physical Activities: The children will continue to develop their swimming style and stamina and use their skills for personal survival. During outdoor games lessons they will develop the skills needed to play tennis and improve their performance in a variety of athletic based activities. Spanish: Arts and Design subjects: In Art the children will be studying portraits and analysing and comparing the work of Rupert Alexander and Andy Warhol. As well as developing their drawing skills they will explore digital medium in making portraits. In Design and Technology photo frames will be designed and made. Again the children will use digital software as part of the process and will use a variety of tools to cut , join and assemble their product. In music the children will listen to and appraise songs. They will change lyrics and accompaniments in order to preform their own versions. The children will continue to develop their language skills this term to prepare them for the learning of modern foreign languages in secondary school. …and finally: The children will be visiting their new schools and will ensure that we do everything in our power to prepare them for this next stage.
