Year 6 – Frequently Asked Questions Allerton High School Transition 2020
Introduction Thank you, Year 6, for your thoughtful and varied questions. As you can imagine, many of you want to know about the same sorts of things so we have grouped your questions into the main areas that were asked about and have provided answers on the following slides. It is really important to us at Allerton High School that you feel welcomed and comfortable as you begin Year 7 and we are working hard to make sure that you get off to a flying start!
How will you decide which groups we are taught in? • In the last term of Year 6 we spend a lot of time gathering information about our new students. This comes from your primary school teachers, your parents and from you! We then look carefully at how to put all of our new students into coaching groups based on this information. • When you join us September, your new teachers in some lessons such as maths will look at the work you produce in and outside of lessons for homework and look at how you do in assessments to help them to decide on which class is right for you.
How strict is the uniform policy? • It is really important to us that everyone follows the uniform policy closely. Your coaches will make sure that you understand the policy and we will work with you to make changes if we need to. • We do have non uniform days throughout the year that are enjoyed by staff as well as students. We ask students to make a £ 1 contribution charity on these days.
How will we find our way around school? • Year 7 will have some time in school on the first day in September before most other year groups arrive. This will help you to get used to the building as you meet each other and your new teachers. • You will be given your planners on the first day and be taken on a tour of the school. Don’t forget that you can watch the virtual tour of the school on our website.
Is there a rewards policy and a behaviour policy • Students receive stamps in their planners for having a positive attitude to learning in lessons. There are opportunities to earn stamps in every single lesson at school. Stamps can be traded in for real rewards. The rewards change every year but examples include earphones, phone cases and £ 20 vouchers, depending on how many stamps you earn. • We do have a positive behaviour policy at school. This really helps students to understand the rules of the classroom which will be similar to the rules in primary school. We will explain more about the rewards policy and the behaviour policy on your first day.
What about homework? • You will be expected to complete homework for all of your subjects. However, we have a homework timetable that teachers follow to make sure that it is nicely spread out across the week. This will give you enough time to complete homework for all subjects without it piling up. • Your teachers will show you how to record the homework that you are asked to do by writing it in your planner. We will always explain the work carefully to you before you leave our lesson.
What will September be like? Lots of your questions asked about the changes we are making for September because of Covid 19. We are working very hard to make sure that you get off to a great start in Year 7. Although things may be different to the way we normally work, you will get to know our school, staff and students as you normally would. As always with Year 7, you will study a wide range of different subjects and have opportunities to be part of and contribute to wider school life at Allerton High. Over the summer holidays will we send you all of the information you need for your first day in September. Have a happy and safe summer holiday, The Year 7 Team
