YEAR 5 MUSIC PROJECT ROCK LESSON 4
Welcome back Year 5 as we continue to explore: ROCK MUSIC Log in to YUMU and then we are ready to begin this week’s lesson…. .
1. Let’s start this week with the games track (right menu) but this time click on “PULSE - ANIMALS”. Make sure that you stay in time with whatever the animals do and keep an even PULSE
2. Is it a Rock Song? Last week you started analysing music to try and identify the style. You will remember we have “Style Indicators” which are the characteristics that songs of a particular style of music share. Use your tick list from last week to decide whether this week’s song is a Rock Song or not The style indicators for a Rock song are on the following slide.
• • Heavily-amplified guitar. Bass guitar. Drums. Keyboard sounds. Often male vocals with backing vocals from other band members. Frequent solo guitar. Sometimes distortion of the sound. A heavy backbeat.
Your song this week is Fresh Prince Of Bel Air by Will Smith Is it a Rock song? Use your tick list to decide……………… Click on each line of the list on the next slide for the answer………….
Heavily-amplified guitar? NO Bass guitar? YES Drums? YES – BUT LIGHT, NOT HEAVY AS IN A ROCK SONG Keyboard sounds? YES Often male vocals with backing vocals from other band members? NO – IT’S RAPPING
Frequent solo guitar? NO Sometimes distortion of the sound? NO A heavy backbeat? NO SO IS IT A ROCK SONG? NO I just thought I slip that song in to fool you……. .
3. Click on the right menu “Learn to sing the song”) But this week use the Backing Track. Practice each section separately rather than the whole song. If you have problems with timing, practice with the “Vocal Track” again Make sure you get the tune and the timing just right.
4. PRACTICE PLAYING YOUR INSTRUMENTS Just as you did last week, click on “Play your instruments” and then on “Recorder medium part”. You can change the tempo by using the + or – button at the bottom. Remember that different instruments are in different keys The notes for Recorder are also fine for Flute, Keyboard, Guitar, violin, etc. If you play a clarinet or trumpet, look at the music on the following slides. You might be able to get someone to print your music off for you so you can practice. If you don’t play an instrument, why don’t you make a shaker and play along with that, making up your own rhythms to go with the backing, or just keeping an even beat.
This version could be played on Recorder, keyboard, violin F F G G A A Bb Bb
G G A A B B C C
G G A A B B C C
5. COMPOSE YOUR OWN TUNE This is something you all can do, even if you don’t play an instrument. Click on “Compose with the song” Drag the notes into the boxes and then you can hear what it sounds like by pressing PLAY. If you don’t like it, then press clear and start again. I suggest turning the BACKING VOLUME at the bottom left down a bit so you can her better.
Then, when you like your composition you can press the SAVE button (you will need to save it in a place where you can easily find it again). Then have a go at playing it on your instrument by following the note names. Remember, if you play a recorder, flute, violin, guitar, etc. then the notes are fine for you BUT If you play a trumpet or clarinet you will need to change the music to Bb by clicking on PLAYBACK OPTIONS at the bottom and click Bb – It will automatically change the notes for you. If any of you play a saxophone, you will need to click on Bb Then practice with the backing track DON’T FORGET TO CHANGE THE PLAYBACK OPTION TO Bb IF YOU PLAY A TRUMPET OR CLARINET
5. Finally – Sing the song all through and try and add your composition in the instrumental section. You will need to click on the “Whole Song” icon, and choose “SING AND PLAY COMPOSITIONS”. This will mean you won’t have any vocals to help you! When you get to the green section on the bottom of the screen it will prompt you to play your instruments, using the music you have been practicing. It might be best to slow it down a bit using the bottom menu.
If that is all too difficult, then just sing through with the Vocal track for now and keep practicing until you can do it with just the backing. Have fun Year 5 and Let’s Rock!!!!!!
