Year 4 Science learning task: 18. 5. 20. Today we are going to look at how we can use art to have a better understanding of living things.
Let’s start with a guessing game. Choose your favourite of these fruits, but don’t tell your adult which one it is. Give them as many clues as they can to guess which fruit you have chosen!
Can you remember the different groups animals can be classified in? Test yourself by telling your adult. Check if you are right by clicking on this link
For centuries, scientists have used careful and detailed drawings to better understand living things.
Do you think these scientific drawings can be called art? Why?
Do you think these scientific drawings can be called art? Why?
The detailed drawings by naturalist Charles Darwin helped us to better understand living things from around the world.
Although sketches and notes are still made by scientists, the artist, Levon Biss, is using a more modern approach to capturing the detail of some beautiful invertebrates. Click here to find out more.
Now its your turn to have a go at creating your own scientific drawing. You will need to divide your page into 4 sections to complete your scientific drawing. If possible, you can use a mobile phone to take and enlarge the image of one of the animals on the following pages.
Print and cut out the invertebrate you would like to draw.
Remember : You may need to practise a few times to make your drawing accurate like Austin’s butterfly. Click here to remind you how Austin improved his drawings.
