Year 4: Composing a melody Ms Helen Magri
Last week, we started writing a piece of music. This week, we are going to write a melody for the rhythms we wrote. For today’s lesson, you need your work from last week, a pencil, an eraser, and you need to use this online xylophone: https: //musicplayonline. com/xylophone/ Ms Helen Magri

Once you have finished your piece, think about how you would like it to be played. Do you want it played quickly or slowly or at a moderate tempo? (remember, tempo means ‘speed’). In music, we use a lot of Italian words to describe how a piece of music should be played. Look at the following words and choose one for your piece. Ms Helen Magri
Largo = very slow Adagio = slow Ms Helen Magri
Andante = at a walking pace Ms Helen Magri
Moderato = at a moderate speed Ms Helen Magri
Allegro = fast Presto = very fast Ms Helen Magri
Remember, the speed of music is known as the tempo Ms Helen Magri
Largo – very slow Adagio – slow Andante – at a walking pace Moderato – at a moderate speed Allegro – fast Presto – very fast Once you have chosen the tempo you want your piece to be played at, write the Italian word at the beginning of your piece. Ms Helen Magri
I have chosen andante (at a walking pace) so I have written Andante that at the beginning of my piece. cat ta kitten ti ti G E F kitten cat D ti A ta G cat ta E C kitten ti ti F kitten ti ti cat ta F cat ta D me-ow! ta-a G E me-ow! ta-a E G kitten ti ti cat ta D CMs Helen Magri
Lastly, give your piece a name and write it at the top. Don’t forget to write your name too. I called my piece Summer Sunshine so I’m going to write that at the top with my name. Ms Helen Magri
